Five die, 100 disembodied missing after earthquake relief plane crashes

By Syliva Ng

BANTUL, Indonesia — A twin-engine plane carrying Disembodied Without Borders volunteers crashed here about 6:45 p.m. MDT Tuesday (7:45 a.m. Wednesday local time), killing five.

The plane was moving 125 disembodied volunteers to the area to help with relief efforts after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that hit the Indonesian province of Yogyakarta Saturday.

Charlotte Simmons, the executive director of DWB and at the airport where the plane was to land, said, “We’ve already got many volunteers in the area. The people who were on that flight were volunteers that had recently helped monitor the New Orleans municipal election. They decided they wanted to help. I told them it wasn’t necessary, but they thought it was the right thing to do.”

The pilot, copilot and three living volunteers who act as liaisons to the disembodied volunteers were killed in the crash.

“We’ve got people on the ground now trying to round up our disembodied members. We’ve located 25 so far. I’m sure we’ll find them all eventually,” Simmons said.

The quake’s death toll was already at 5,700 Wednesday morning in Indonesia and more than 200,000 people have been left homeless.

The plane crashed about two miles short of the airport in Bantul, which had only recently been reopened after the earthquake damaged runways had been repaired. Aid has only just starting reaching affected areas. Relief efforts have also been hampered by fears that the Mount Merapi volcano, which has been belching gas and lava for weeks, may be unstable.

“One of our volunteers was a geologist when he was alive and he was going to get as close to the volcano as possible and report on conditions. He’s one of the ones missing,” Simmons said.
