Good Cop, Dead Cop by Jennifer Petkus

When technology and theology collided, the AfterNet was born.

Good Cop, Dead Cop is set almost eight years after the revelation that, not only are disembodied souls all around us, but that the living can communicate with them via the AfterNet. Nations and religions have faltered or fallen while adjusting to the shocking new reality, but disembodied detective Alex Munroe is just happy to be working again in Denver, the home of the web portal for the dead.

Munroe and his living partner, rookie cop Linda Yamaguchi, find investigating a simple missing person report can become quite complicated when that person is disembodied. And her life is complicated enough. Her dead mother won’t leave her alone and she’s got a partner who’s still touchy about his life before death. But as scary as getting long-distance phone calls can be, their investigation puts Yamaguchi in real danger of joining Munroe on the other side when they uncover a sinister conspiracy to trap and enslave the dead.

How can I read the book?

You can either read the book on the Good Cop, Dead Cop blog, or using the e-reader, which makes it much more convenient to read online. It’s formatted like a book, either in one-page or two-page format, it remembers your place if you leave (yes, it uses cookies — tasty, yummy cookies), you can set the point size and number of lines to display and you can use the page up and page down commands to leaf through the book. The first three chapters are also available as PDFs.
