Dr. Olaf Bols claimed fame as the second person contacted through a Simone terminal who hadn’t been trained beforehand. Explains Bols, “I was working at CERN [the particle physics research center in Switzerland] when a tour group came by. We were preparing a test firing of a small accelerator and I was running some power cords. So, a lot of people, a lot of noise. I was up on a catwalk and I'll admit, I was showing off, leaning way out over the tour group. Someone yells out, ‘Hey, Olaf,’ and I turn around. Which was dumb because it wasn’t me they were calling. We had three Olafs there at the time. Anyway, I turn around and trip right over the power cord and pitch head first over the catwalk railing.
“Then, I realize I’m looking at myself, dead and the crowd around me. But as amazing as that was, what was far more amazing are the maze of electrical fields all around me. I could see everything, all at once. I recognized my body, my co-workers, but I also saw the magnetic fields ringing the accelerator. I could see the power lines everywhere. It was like the movie, ‘The Matrix.’ Electrical fields dripping everywhere. Lovely.
“I remained near CERN after my death. I guess I always lived in my head anyway so I didn’t mind. I had no family. These people were my family. My only frustration was when I saw someone making a mistake, or puzzled over something I knew the answer to. I couldn’t help.
“Which is why it was so amazing when they brought in the Simone terminal. A lovely bit of engineering. I could see immediately how it should operate, but it took a while to form the thoughts sufficiently to make contact. Made a little more difficult by all the noise in the air from the electrical fields. Luckily, they realized that early on and moved it to a shielded room, and that's when I was able to go to work on it. ”
Bols contributed to many improvements to the Simone terminal. He still works at CERN.
